Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting after reaching adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental effects that stress could have. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends as she moved from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University moved in New York in search of television roles. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC drama The Family, in 2016. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. The actress was also featured on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
